Merengue
Elvis Crespo

This week’s Subgenre Spotlight is dedicated to merengue, a style of music and dance originating in the Dominican Republic but popular around Latin America.

Developed in the 1800s, merengue has evolved throughout the decades. It features heavy percussion and is always uptempo and danceable (there’s no such thing as slow merengue). In terms of tempo, it ranges anywhere between 120 to 170 BPM.

Browse our Merengue playlist below for the biggest hits of the past three decades.
