Many of the problems that DJs face at gigs, both technical and non-technical, are avoidable had they prepared in advance. Below is a list of five ways DJs can prepare for their gigs. Hopefully, it will help you avoid unnecessary problems and focus on rocking the party.
1. Plan the logistics
Lock down the main details of the event to include—but not limited to—the date, set time, travel or parking, payment, etc.
2. Research
Understand the crowd you’re going to rock by asking your point of contact for musical direction. For public gigs, look up the local market on what music is popular, the party’s theme, and what vibe the venue is trying to capture. For private events, request a song request list and “do not play” list.
3. Promote
For public gigs, give ample time to promote on your social media profiles. It shows the booker that you’re invested in the event’s success. For private events, make sure to get permission from the client for any promotion or recap of events.
4. Connect with industry pros
Before your events, get in touch with the promotors or event vendors, introduce yourself and be a team player. You never know who can refer you for another gig.
5. Manage expectations
Is your contact expecting you to bring in a crowd, bring gear or provide you with food and beverage? Ask any questions that you may have in advance. Your booker or contact is more likely to work with you again if you can avoid miscommunications.
