'90s dancehall
Shabba Ranks

Dancehall music originated in Jamaica in the late ’70s, but it was the ’90s that saw it cross over into the mainstream and become internationally renowned. Many of the genre’s biggest hits were released during the decade, and these tracks remain staples in DJ sets to this day.

During the ’90s, established stars such as Shabba Ranks, Tenor Saw, and Super Cat continued their success, and a new generation of artists emerged, including Lady Saw, Bounty Killer, and Sean Paul. Producers such as Steely & Clevie, Bobby Digital, and Dave Kelly further refined the digital sound of the ’80s, helping it to spread globally.
