DJ Khalil, a GRAMMY-winning staff producer at Dr. Dre‘s Aftermath Entertainment, sits down with DJ Spider on Beatsource‘s The 20 Podcast. The Seattle-born, LA-raised producer started crafting beats for independent hip-hop artists in the ’90s, including his duo Self Scientific. In the mid-2000s, Khalil’s distinctive, hard-hitting sound caught the attention of Dre, who recruited him to Aftermath. Khalil has since produced for some of music’s most prominent artists, including JAY-Z, Drake, Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Kanye, Nas, Kendrick Lamar, Anderson .Paak, Aloe Blacc, and Jon Batiste. (Check out our Produced by DJ Khalil playlist here.) In the interview, Khalil discusses the power of Serato Studio, which he used in his recent Rhythm Roulette episode, what it’s like working with Dr. Dre, how DJing influences his production, plus more.
