Soca
Machel Montano

Soca is a style of Caribbean music that originated in Trinidad and Tobago in the early 1970s. Pioneered by Trinidadian artist Lord Shorty, soca means the “soul of calypso.” In an effort to revive interest in traditional calypso music, he drew influences from African and East Indian rhythms to create what was originally known as “sokah.” Regional soca styles have since developed across the Caribbean, Latin America, US, and UK.

Notable artists include Machel Montano, Patrice Roberts, and Nadia Batson.
