Beatsource has eight official genres in its catalog, but within them, there are hundreds of subgenres. To help DJs discover new styles or learn more about scenes they’re interested in, we’ve launched a new series called Subgenre Spotlight.
The first installment focuses on African pop music, a.k.a. Afropop, which has exploded in recent years. Although it’s been popular in Europe for a decade, the style has only just begun to go mainstream in the US. Artists like Wizkid (pictured above), Burna Boy, Davido, and Fireboy DML have scored global hits in recent years, and this week, Billboard announced its launching the first-ever US chart for African music. The movement shows no signs of slowing.
