New Orleans Bounce
Juvenile

For our third installment of Subgenre Spotlight, we focus on New Orleans bounce a.k.a. NOLA bounce.

Originating in the early ’90s, bounce is an uptempo style of hip-hop that draws influence from Mardi Gras Indian chants and rhythms. Popular artists from the genre include Partners-N-Crime, Magnolia Shorty, Mannie Fresh, Juvenile, and Big Freedia.

In recent years, bounce’s influence has been heard on hits by artists like Drake (“Nice For What“), Diplo (“Express Yourself” feat. Nicky Da B), and N.E.R.D. (“Lemon“).

Browse our NOLA Bounce playlist below. As a bonus, we’ve also included The Showboys’ “Drag Rap,” as it’s the basis of many NOLA Bounce classics.
