5 Ways to Up Your PR Game

You don’t need a public relations (PR) strategy to be a DJ, but having one can help you grow your fan base and income. And if you’re not big enough to hire a publicist, there are things you can do yourself to get the ball rolling.

Here’s a list of 5 ways DJs can improve their PR. Hopefully, it will help you take your career to a higher level.

1. Build relationships
Do your homework and research various publications, writers, editors, promoters, record labels, managers, etc. Follow them on social platforms and “like,” comment, and repost their content to create rapport.

2. Follow up
DM or email them to praise their work and explain how you can bring value. Will their audience enjoy your recent remix or DJ mix? Is there a story behind you as an artist? Don’t be discouraged if you don’t get a response; send a follow-up note!

3. Promote yourself
Post on your social media accounts consistently. Share upcoming gigs and releases. Tag accounts that will repost your content and use hashtags to reach a larger audience and drive them to your profiles.

4. Build an EPK (Electronic Press Kit)
Create a digital folder that can you can share with promoters, clubs, and publications across the industry. Include your bio, press photos, mixes, videos, social media links, career highlights, and contact information.

5. Be persistent
The more you do to promote yourself, the greater your exposure. As a DJ, you want to be seen and recognized for your work. Obtaining good publicity can generate a community that acknowledges and supports you. Don’t be afraid to create your own buzz.
